    I have a black Loog Stratocaster and I love it for practice. It forces me to think differently, but in a super familiar way. I'm writing something for it as an instrument on its own, because I really like it. Mine is tuned perfectly and stays in tune. It really messes with how you damp things, which makes it almost feel like a different instrument.

    I have taken up playing 3 string cigar box guitars. They generally are tuned to open tunings. I use Gdg. I want one of these new Fender Loogs. Cigar box guitars are very popular for playing blues, and I use slides. There are other 3 string tunings, but Gdg seems most common. Also open d and open e are used. Most are acoustic/electrics with puedo pickupx, but some are solid bodies with single coil or humbucker pickups. That is what I would do with the Fender/Loog.

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 3 місяці тому

      Hi, thanks for asking, and that is a good question! Have you tried to play guitar or any string instruments before? I think it really depends on your goals and how you learn. I think the 3-string Loog guitars (pro size, not the mini) would be good for an adult who wants to start playing right away and have chords be really simple. (Rather than something that takes lots of time and practice to do well). I'd say it takes a lot less time to start playing along with songs on the 3-string guitars than the 6 string guitars.

    I would love to get one of these for my son - we are starting him in music now at 7 years old (although he has been trained in vocals since 3) - he would like to learn the electric guitar as well as bass. I was told he is too young for bass - so to go with eukelele or the acoustic guitar but he's not interested in the acoustic guitar. Bad news is that Loog is not available in South Africa - to import this guitar is going to cost almost as much as the actual guitar which is the current barrier. Right now I'm thinking to start him on a eukelele. What would your advice be Ben?

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 3 місяці тому

      Hello, and what an excellent question! Thanks so much for asking, and sorry for my delay! We just moved and have finally settled in. First of all, that is SO cool your son has studied vocals from such a young age. That will serve him so well, musically. If you are still looking for some advice on instruments, I'd really love to help. Here are some first thoughts... ANY stringed instrument with frets that you can get him (ukulele, Loog, Bass, acoustic or electric guitar) is a good place to start, since they are all very similar and many of the skills he learns on one can be used on the others. Based on what you shared about his interests, he'd probably enjoy the Loog pro electric a lot, and I'll see if I can think of any creative ideas on how to get him one. For now, ukulele is available anywhere, and much of the technique is the same. Here is a playlist I created that covers some of the first few things to try on ukulele. ua-cam.com/play/PLqTwgGRP1t3oItMwDcX3PyIJxwQaBHsdl.html As far as Bass guitar goes, there ARE smaller ones that are comfortable for kids, but it does require a bit more finger strength. Also, since the bass tends to play simpler, lower parts of songs, it doesn't always sound like the song right away. ALSO, since I know he's a singer, it makes me wonder if it's smartest to start out with an instrument he can use to accompany his voice easily. For that, Loog guitar or Ukulele work very well. I am curious what kind of songs he enjoys most, as that can play a part in the best instrument. Feel free to ask if you have any followup questions, or I'd be delighted to hop on a free 15 min zoom call if you'd like to see some examples of the differences between instruments. No obligation for lessons - I just really am passionate about helping people find the right instrument. Here is my meeting scheduler: fons.app/@benbrill/individual

    You remind me of Rick Moranis! By the way, I have been playing guitar since I was 12 and I am 56 now. I may want to buy one just for fun and to play at work since I work at night and am a lone most the time.

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 3 місяці тому

      Ha! Rick is a cool guy. Absolutely on the idea of playing one of these just for fun. I like them when I want to relax and not play anything too complicated. If volume isn't a problem at work, you can crank the internal amp up, or plug in headphones if you want it quieter. Certainly a nice way to let the mind wander and experiment on fewer strings.

    Would you also recommend this ukulele for adults?

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 4 місяці тому

      Most of the time! The Loog uke is a solid instrument. Just depends on your goals for your uke playing. I've played ukes from several brands, and here are the things that I think make this uke special: 1. Two Strap buttons built in, which I love for easy playing posture with a strap. I don't see many ukes come with 2 strap buttons 2. It's got a distinctive and cool style. This is a Soprano size uke, which is a size I play often. I also reach for a concert size (The next size up in ukulele) if 'm working on a more challenging song. Sometimes! The Loog uke can often do that to.

      its probably fine if anything it still gets your fingers more used to pressing the strings. Im a guitar player of 20 years looking at this for my 4 year old as a super non-intimidating approach to just get her to start learning to make different sounds by pressing the frets

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 4 місяці тому

      Great question - It really depends on your goals, but I look at the Loog 3 string guitars as an awesome instrument that is fun to play for any person of any age. I also play classical guitar, bass, banjo, and violin, and some days I just want to play the loog for the simplicity and sound. It won't be too hard, but there's no limit to what you can do on a loog if you want a challenge. If you were to also work through the chord cards that come with the guitars, and try out some of the songs yourself in the Loog app, I think you'd enjoy the process, and be able to help your daughter too. Hey, Kane - Yes, it can certainly be tricky at first! I notice that the Loog app mostly works on my student's phones and iPads, but the tuner does not always work. Not sure why, but it is frustrating. As a backup option, I'd suggest getting the free version of the "Fender Tune" app here: www.fender.com/pages/tune-app-guitar-tuner It's not quite as simple as the Loog app, but it works really well. I put together a video on how to use it. ua-cam.com/video/f9YZcjg-NK4/v-deo.html Let me know if you are still stuck! And FYI, the strings on a new Loog, or any guitar will take a weeks to really "settle in". You'll have to tune more frequently at first than you will after that. The Loog mini acoustic especially holds it's tune extremely well after the strings have settled.

    im really into electric guitar and like to pretend i can play everytime i hear electric guitars, but i have no idea how to play one so im thinking of getting this to learn, 6 strings really scares me. I got issues though most of the tabs and tutorials use 6 strings...

    • @thomasflores7817
      @thomasflores7817 4 місяці тому

      tabs and tutorials? no it wont be much help in that regard. Im interested in this as a guitar player of 20 years as a way to get my 4 year old daughter to start learning, just how to make sounds. Just so she can start figuring out how to press down the strings on the frets and change the sound of thew strings. Something that having grown up in a house full of guitars i could pick up and try to learn, i did not try until i was 9 or 10 years old. I want my daughter to be confident to do that at 4. I see this as a super straightforwards non-intimidating, fun approach to that goal. If you have ZERO guitar experience as an adult, id say its a fun $200 toy that might get you more interested in actually pursuing guitar. How you feel about that price point for a toy becomes the issue then, but i also see no reason why you couldnt get $100 or $150 re selling it to a parent, or if you have your own kids/ grandkids, nieces nephews whatever, itd make an awesome gift as well

      Hey! Great question, and I do hope you'll start playing guitar in some way. It's a lot of fun, and doesn't have to be scary. Even 6 string doesn't have to be hard if you approach it the right way. Any particular songs or artists you'd want to be playing on guitar? I know it's overwhelming how many learning resources there are, but there are certainly some good ones The Loog method actually does have some tutorials in the app. Depending on how old you are, it might feel pretty young because it's designed for kids, but I personally can get into it and find challenges. The free verison of the loog app can get you started playing, and the paid version (backstage pass which is about $40 / year) has some gamified songs that get you playing too. The Loog pro is still available, and is unchanged! Loog DID just release two new guitars a few months ago that don't have built in amps. (Loog X Fender, Telecaster and Stratocaster). I like those guitars too, as they look incredible and feel like smaller versions of the originals. But, for the built in amp, which is truly a great, useful, convenient, and practical feature, get a loog pro!

      Thanks for the tip! I hadn't heard of those before and just looked it up. I'm keep an eye out for one and see how they compare. At first look, it seems like a comfortable size for a kid if I felt like 6 strings is right for them. I really do like the built in-amps that loog has on some of their guitars, but the VOX could be great for certain scenarios. Have you played one?

    Would you recommend loog pro vi acoustic or splurge for baby guitar from one of the big well known brands?

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the awesome question! It depends on who is playing the guitar, but I have in the past tried out the Baby Taylor and Martin GS mini with students of mine. These students were between 8-10 years old, and in both cases, the "baby" guitars were a little too big for comfort. Both the neck width, and the shape of the body. The Loog pro Vi has a smaller body and a neck that allowed for more reach, so both of those students were happier on the Loog. The Martin and Taylor DO have slightly better setups and tone which comes with the super fine craftsmanship, but at the end of the day, these students preferred something that didn't feel awkward to hold. I really do like those baby guitars though, and would suggest them for a kid who is maybe 12 + and has had some experience already.

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 10 місяців тому

      Brilliant question! I have a few initial ideas, but I will keep thinking and will likely come up with more : ) First off, the Loog Pro can be quite loud with the steel strings that come on it. I enjoy the sound of nylon strings on it, which are a little more mellow sounding. By nature, electric guitars sound way quieter, but can be plugged in and kids can wear headphones if they want for quiet practice. But, I think there's a way to improve your situation without buying anything new. Will return to this!

    Open tuning on a guitar is just as easy

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative 3 місяці тому

      True that on open tuning guitars! I'll almost always do that with a brand new student just to help them fall in love with how the guitar sounds, and feel the resonance. I used to teach riffs and melody in 6 string open tunings, but wasn't really sure how to get them doing the scales, traditional chords, and other skills to help them learn popular songs. The Loogs work best for me teaching those basic guitar skills to young kids. But definitely a place for open tunings on bigger guitars.

    Yes! This addresses my exact question....can I put nylon string on my son's Pro Acoustic 3 str.? I asked Loog if I could put the nylon strings from the "Mini" on the "Pro". They said no (in the chat box). I don't understand why?? It just might be easier to have a ball end rather than tying knots. Regardless, thank you for this video! I'm a violinist & teacher with a rocker son. So, we are starting guitar. Daddy played guitar (but not really anymore). When I proposed putting nylons on the Pro for our son, he cackled & told me all the reasons this was ridiculous & he learned on steel thus so could our son.(Except the hubs was 12 when he started & our son is 5--big difference in tender fingers). But, me being a music teacher that's worked with kids for almost 20 years, I know that pain matters especially to little kids. I find that the Loog Pro steel strings are kinda painful even to me & my fingers can handle strings. There's no way my 5 year old wouldn't have trouble with that. Anyway, thanks for this video, despite my husband's cackling, I'm going to get those nylons on this guitar!!! Subscribe!

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative Рік тому

      I’m so glad the video was helpful! I do agree that putting some nylons on your son’s Loog pro would be a big improvement! After a while, he may be able to handle the acoustic steel strings, which may be a fun experiment down the road. The nylon sounds really sweet though ! I know 100% that the strings I linked to in description work, but if you wanted to avoid tying knots, here’s a pack that should be equivalent, but with ball ends ( no tying): a.co/d/1YkzC9N One more thing I was thinking about for your son: I may have mentioned in the video that you could use the D G and B strings from the 6 string pack on the Loog. That works well BUT for a 5 year old, I’d suggest just using the G B and E as the Loog G B and E. Will be even a bit easier to press : ) Good luck to you, and would love to hear how it goes! Reach out anytime if you get stuck, and I could even hop on a quick zoom call one of these days if he needs any help getting notes to sound clearly

      Hey, James! I felt a bit weird myself about playing these, and I totally get it. Whoa, it sounds like you’ve had a ton of experience playing! Any particular styles you have preferred playing? I ask because I think there’s a lot of fun to be had for intermediate/ advanced guitarists with some of these loogs. You do do a lot with different styles. For me, I like the challenge of arranging pop or classical songs on the 3 string Loog. Though I still play 6 string a lot, it’s kind of a zen / forced simplification that’s fun for me. Plus, it’s just small and convenient to have around, and I just tend to get a unique kind of enjoyment from these guitars. Yes, the 3 year olds would be playing the Loog mini guitar. The Loog that I personally like to play is the Loog pro acoustic. A little bigger and good tone. I sometimes put classical strings on it too for variety.

    What would you recommend for a six-year-old to learn easier? Loog or a ukulele

    • @BenBrillCreative
      @BenBrillCreative Рік тому

      If ease and simplicity is the goal (which I think is an awesome goal for kids that age!), I personally find the the Loog 3 string to be a little easier than uke. The chords usually require fewer fingers, and I find it much easier to hold. For me, I also find it easier to teach kids how to play that guitar with a pick, rather than the method of strumming a ukulele properly. I will go for ukulele, however, if I know a student is really obsessed with the idea of learning that exact instrument, or if they like the higher sound of it. For most six year olds I teach, I find they usually enjoy the Loog more once they get a good start on it, Especially if their real goal is to learn guitar or rock music. I hope that helps!
